Colouring is such a great way to spend time with your kids. Sitting side by side, admiring each other’s work and taking the opportunity to teach your kids about colours and pictures. Most of us can agree that it is a very calming event to do on your own as well! In the past I bought a couple adult colouring books for myself that I would work on next to our daughter when she was colouring. These were great, however, I found that it would take me a very long time to finish, as the adult colouring books do tend to have a lot of beautiful detail. Completing an extensive colouring project can be very good for building character, and even showing your young ones how to persevere for the end result. However, if you are just looking to colour and complete your picture in the time that your toddler colours, then this is the post for you!
Last year I started making my own colouring sheets. I made the designs simple enough to be completed by the time my toddler was ready to move on to the next activity. We would then hang both our papers on the fridge and have something to talk about when my husband got home from work.
This particular colouring sheet is not only simple and quick, it is also a great way to meditate and ground yourself. I call this sheet the “I AM”, because it literally says “I am” LOL. I made this sheet because I found that there were times during the new-baby-motherhood stage where I felt like I would forget who I was. I once read in a mom book about how it good to write down who you are and what you are good at. I found this to be a great activity to speak truths to myself, and so I re-created it in this quick colouring sheet for moms.
This was also inspired by Disney’s Moana soundtrack. There is the one song called “I am Moana”, where Moana goes through a list of who she is. She begins by stating that she loves her island, the sea, that she is a daughter to the chief, the great adventures she has accomplished and then finally ending with a great climax to the song where she sings “I am Moannaaaaaa”. I love it! Gives me goosebumps every time. Yes… sometimes I do sing “I am Mariaaaaaa” LOL!
You may choose to add in words or phrases that start with the words, “I am”. For example words like “beautiful”, “loved”, “courageous”, or even just things that you do like, “I am a swimmer”, “I am an artistic person” . Otherwise, leaving it as is and hanging it up is a great reminder throughout your day to speak positive truths about yourself.
Feel free to print off multiples and pass on to your circles! Let’s spread the word and rewrite our inner daily narrative!
